Project summary: This project examines how well two grant programs administered by the California Air Resources Board—the Clean Mobility Options Voucher Program and the Sustainable Transportation Equity Project—are working to help communities identify and meet transportation needs in an equitable manner. The scope of this work includes a review of transportation needs assessment methods, planning and implementation by grant recipients, and agency practices in grant administration.

This project is a joint effort between scholars at the Othering and Belonging Institute and the UC Davis Institute of Transportation Studies and Center for Regional Change.

Equity in the Use of Emerging Data Sources for Transportation Planning

Project summary: There are critical gaps in our understanding of how the use of emerging data sources to plan for transportation infrastructure and service might affect social equity. In the present study, we aim to address these two knowledge gaps through the following objectives/questions:

How do US cities use crowdsourced and crowd-sensed data to make decisions about transportation infrastructure and service?

How spatially representative are the crowdsourced and crowd-sensed data that cities use to plan for transportation infrastructure and service?

We are currently answering the first research question via interviews with planners across the US.

Project collaborators include Lindsay Braun at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign and Greg Griffin at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Evaluating IDOT's Community Impact Assessment Manual to Determine Socioeconomic Impacts of Projects

Project summary: An updated Community Impact Assessment Manual will be a critical tool as the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) implements the transportation components of the capital bill. This research provides IDOT with a modern approach to evaluate economic benefits and demonstrate that its investments are benefiting all people across the state, regardless of socioeconomic status. This project will examine: 1) What is the academic research and state of practice with respect to community impact assessment since IDOT last published the Community Impact Assessment Manual? 2) How can updated analytical methods for community impact assessment create sustainable and equitable conditions in Illinois communities?

Project collaborators include Lindsay Braun and the Center for Neighborhood Technology.
